Actually not necessary, but should be watched so as to understand the common thread in the previous episode. Based on what has been revealed so far, apart from assuming one Reddit user, Jar Jar Binks less likely to become an important figure in Episode VII so you can skip Episode I. But if one wanted to watch it, you should watch after Episode V, or after completing the fifth film.

The Force Awakens occurred 30 years after Return of the Jedi (Episode VI). One reason took 30 years after the Battle of Endor for Return of the Jedi was released in 1983 or 32 years ago, so that it becomes the only way for the director, J.J. Abrams to show the actors and actresses to play back previous role.
3. What happens after Return of the Jedi?

Slowly, Disney has revealed what happens after Return of the Jedi through several novels and comic books known as “Journey To The Force Awakens” (there are currently more than 20 books and comics). In order not to have to read it all, here is a brief summary:
Empire did not end with the death of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, but it appears the battle for Moffs (seteara by the governor) to fight each other for power. Meanwhile, the Rebel Alliance to reform into New Republic under the leadership of Mon Mothma (one of the leaders of the Rebel Alliance, played by Caroline Blakiston in Episode VI). When Empire in chaos, the New Republic spread throughout the galaxy and freed many planets are still under the rule of the kingdom. In fact, many high-ranking military officials and Moffs who defected to the New Republic.
As a final attempt to attack the New Republic, Grand Moff Imperial Navy RandD carrying troops left to fight Jakku New Republic on the planet. The planet is an important target for the New Republic for their imperial weapons facilities. At this point, the hero of the Star Wars trilogy took the road respectively. Luke went to a planet Devoran to learn hone Force and rebuild the Jedi Temple. Leia took a position as a general in the New Republic. Han Solo and Chewbacca went to the planet Kashyyyk which is still under the control of the kingdom and assist gave him his freedom.
However, when peace seemed to have been reached, a group of royalists disliked the peace treaty and fled to the corner of the galaxy and form tiny air force. They call themselves as the First Order and wanted to re-establish the Empire and to continue the idea of Palpatine. The Force Awakens in the future, their strength has been enlarged and is led by Supreme Leader Snoke (played by Andy Serkis).

The initial cast is back, but not a major star in the latest film. Like the previous films with a trio of Luke, Leia, and Han, the latest film introduces three new heroes that Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Poe (Oscar Isaac). Finn started from a stormtrooper who defected from the First Order and somehow holding the property of Anakin Skywalker lightsaber (yes, the same lightsaber is missing from Luke’s hand when Darth Vader cuts off his hand in Episode V); Rey is a scavenger secondhand Jakku that provide assistance to Finn; and Poe Dameron is a famous pilot in the Resistance, one faction against the First Order. Interesting trivia about Poe: his parents, Shara Bey and Kes Dameron, fought in the Battle of Endor and became the protagonist in comics Marvel, Shattered Empire.

One of the major discussion emerge from Episode VII poster featuring the new Death Star image. Although not confirmed, the picture is the possibility of Starkiller Base, a planet that is home to the First Order. Instead of man-made structures such as the Death Star, Starkiller Base is an ice planet that has been converted into a super-sized guns. According to Starwars.com, Starkiller Base outperformed the Death Star as “armed with a new weapon capable of destroying entire star system.”
Star Wars fans will recognize the name as the name Starkiller prepared early George Lucas for Luke, before choosing Skywalker.
7. What about the whole story Expanded Universe?
Under Disney, all this never happened.
Expanded Universe (EU) began in 1991 with the release of bukul work of Timothy Zahn, Heir to the Empire, much like Episodoe VII, discusses the events after Return of the Jedi. At that time, George Lucas was no intention to make more Star Wars movies (though the prequel trilogy), so he let a lot of novels, comics, and video games to continue the story of the film. The stories became canon (the official story) and was officially regarded as part of the Star Wars universe. Until finally Disney bought Lucasfilm. In order to tell the story they want to convey, Disney Star Wars canon must remove and replace the entire EU as “Star Wars Legends” and remove it from the official story.
Officially, the only media which is considered as the canon is the sixth movie (going to be seven), two animated series, Clone Wars and the Rebels, novels and comics that have been released Disney-Lucasfilm
